TigerSwan Supports Historic U.S. Business Mission to Baghdad
On Sunday, December 9th, over 100 delegates, representing more than 50 U.S. companies, arrived in Baghdad, Iraq, to participate in a historic visit to Iraq by an American private-sector delegation.
Hosted by the U.S. – Iraq Business Initiative, which is a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Business Mission to Baghdad was the first U.S. business delegation to visit Iraq in the post-ISIS era.
Spanning three days, the visit afforded participants the opportunity to meet with senior leadership from the newly-formed Government of Iraq.
A Visit of Many Firsts
While the delegation’s visit was historic in its own right, the visit coincided with two other events of national significance: Victory Day and the partial opening of the International Zone.
On Monday, December 10th, Iraq celebrated “Victory Day.” Declared a national holiday, Victory Day 2018 was the country’s first anniversary commemorating the costly victory over Daesh. The day was marked with a moment of silence, which was held at midday, and numerous celebrations across the country.
In December 2017, the Iraqi government declared victory over Daesh after a three-year war in which tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.
Later in the day, the Iraqi government began opening parts of the fortified International Zone (IZ), also known as the Green Zone.
Established after the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the IZ is located on the west bank of the Tigris River and became home to numerous embassies and government buildings. This area was surrounded by blast walls and barbed wire and was inaccessible to most Iraqis.
The partial opening of the IZ, coupled with Victory Day, was a very symbolic event intended to demonstrate increased confidence in the country’s overall security situation.
Transportation and Security Support for the Delegation
TigerSwan served as the official provider of transportation and security services for the delegation.
This began with security planning with the host venue, the Babylon Warwick Hotel. The Babylon is a 300-room hotel located on the banks of the Tigris River in the Al-Jadriya district of Baghdad. The security team at the Babylon is top-notch, making this hotel a great venue for group meetings.
Additional services to support the mission included:
• PSD teams for transit to/from Baghdad International Airport;
• Armored buses to support group movements to the U.S. Embassy for an evening reception with the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and to the Palace of Iraqi President H.E. Dr. Barham Salih for a business meeting;
